High Ground Over the DuPage River's East Branch
Woodridge was deliberately built on a ridge sloping toward the DuPage River's East Branch starting in 1958, and the village incorporated in August 1959 with a single 109-home subdivision of GI Bill-financed houses. That elevated siting was meant to keep the original development above the river branch below it.
Grading Cuts Both Ways for Basements
Ridge siting can reduce river-flood risk, but the grading and fill work needed to build on that slope can also create uneven drainage patterns around individual foundations -- and Woodridge's basements still sit on DuPage County's expansive clay regardless of elevation.
